⚠ This stores a secret
It is encrypted before it reaches the database and never appears in a response or a log. It is still worth knowing: an investor password cannot be revoked on its own the way an exchange API key can, and often changes with your master password.
The credential is checked against the venue before it is stored. If it turns out to allow trading or withdrawal, the connection is refused and nothing is saved.
How to create the key checked September 2026
Your broker issues the investor password
  1. 1Find your account number — it is in your terminal under File → Open an Account, and in your broker's client area.
  2. 2Get your investor password. Most brokers show it in the client area; some email it when the account is opened. It is not your master password.
  3. 3Find your server name, shown in the terminal as something like ICMarketsSC-Live12.

Worth knowing about MetaTrader 5
  • The investor password cannot place trades — that is the point of it. But unlike an exchange key it cannot be revoked on its own: changing it is the only way to withdraw access, so change it if you stop using this journal.
  • MetaTrader has no retail server API, so this connects through MetaApi, a third party. That is a per-account monthly cost.
  • MT5 does not expose historical stop amendments, so the moved-stops pattern shows as unavailable rather than empty.
  • Broker server time is frequently not UTC. Sessions are normalised on import, but check your session table looks right.
Exchanges move these settings without warning. If what you see does not match, MetaApi ↗ is the authority — and nothing here ever asks you to enable trading or withdrawal.
